As pediatric dentists, Dr. Kim, Dr. Emily, and Dr. Kamath strive to help children grow into adulthood with healthy dental habits. Establishing and maintaining good oral health early will radically reduce a child’s chances of developing decay and infection later.

Examining a child at a young age is an opportunity for parents to receive information from us regarding important issues about their child’s health such as:

  • Oral hygiene
  • Dietary habits
  • Sucking habits that are non-nutritive and dangerous
  • Decay risks based on multiple factors including family history
  • Dental injuries and trauma

We also can often detect issues in early development that can cause other serious problems later.

WHEN SHOULD YOU BEGIN YOUR CHILD'S DENTAL CARE?

Our office of encourages you to bring your child in for his or her first visit by one year of age or their first tooth. This recommendation is in line with those of the American Dentist Association (ADA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD).

Care provided by a pediatric dentist is the ideal alternative to emergency room care when your child experiences dental issues and/or trauma.

APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING

Our pediatric dentistry office tries to schedule appointments at your convenience. We offer the following suggestions for scheduling:

  • Preschool-aged children should be seen in the morning, as this makes it easier to work at a slower pace for their comfort.
  • School-aged children who require more work should also be scheduled in the morning for the same purpose.

A visit to the pediatric dentist is an excused absence, and our office will be happy to sign a note. As regular care continues, school absences can be kept to a minimum.

Please be aware that we schedule appointment times for each patient specifically. We request that you notify our office 24 hours in advance if you find you're unable to make your scheduled time. We have other patients who also need our care; with a proper allotment of time to inform them, our pediatric dentist office can schedule them in your empty time slot. Of course we understand that life is unpredictable, but we request your cooperation so things can run smoothly for everyone. If late cancellations and no shows become a habit, we will unfortunately have to charge you.

  • Create a message section for the contact us or even a pull down with “I want to be a new patient” or “I have a concern for my child’s teeth” (same as home page)
  • Remove office hours on bottom as they are incorrect

First Visit

First and foremost, WELCOME to Midwest Pediatric Dentistry. We are excited to work with you and your family. The first visit can lay the groundwork for happy visits to the pediatric dentist in the future. If your child is old enough to understand, feel free to tell them about the visit ahead of time.
Here are some great references:

Please refrain from using words such as “drill,” “shot,” “needle,” “pull,” and especially “hurt,” so as to not cause unnecessary nervousness. Dr. Kim, Dr. Emily, Dr. Kamath, and their staff will explain what will happen and answer all of the child's questions at the appointment. This helps a child not to get overly worried or frightened. Our team has made it a standard to use words that are more pleasant and not “scary” to the children while simply conveying what is going to happen.
You are welcome to stay with your child during their appointments. We simply ask that you act as a silent observer during the child's visit and allow for us to build rapport and a relationship with your child. Our goal is to gain your child's trust and make him or her feel comfortable at each visit to prevent a fear of coming back. Please remember for the safety and privacy of our other patients, children who are not being treated should be kept in the reception area under the supervision of an adult.
